Catching up on viewer projects

Catching up on some viewer projects.

It seems Quarto turned out to be my most popular project this past Christmas season. It has been fun seeing all the variations you have come up with. Jeff Hammond had the clever idea to add a chalkboard top to this one he made for his nephews so they can keep score as they play!

*****
Bill Wilson made his version for his granddaughter. Not having a lathe,  he used dowels for the round pieces:

*****
"Byrdie" as he is known around the interwebs, made a couple of Quarto games as gifts and had the great idea to include a set of instructions with each one. If you would like to make a game as a gift, you here are his instructions all ready for you to print out.

*****
Quick project idea! Even though Christmas has passed, there are always occasions to make quick gifts. Marinos Georgopoulos, a new woodworker in Greece with limited space and no power tools made these candle holders for his first project. Woodworking gifts dont have to be complicated to me well-received. I love the colors on these.

*****
Another first project. This one from Mike Chambers who was ambitious enough to make this hickory and maple jewelry box for his wife. I always like to tell new woodworkers that boxes make good projects to start with. You can learn a lot of basic woodworking techniques by making one.

*****
And speaking of boxes, check out Freeman Colemans first hardwood project he made out of tiger caspi wood. (Its based on a video I made ages ago.) Freeman says he never touched a saw until a month ago! Not bad at all.

*****
It seems no update is complete without including a mallet! Here is one that Eric Duran made from olive wood.

*****
Mikk Sülla in Estonia has been making end grain cutting boards. Cutting boards are great projects and leave a lot of room for creativity. He made these using oak, ash, birch, maple and walnut. Every woodworker should make at least one cutting board!

*****
This little snowman from Randy Cosgrove is too cute not to share. Maple, walnut and padauk. Randy recently got a lathe and discovered Carl Jacobson’s web site and wood turning videos. Even if you dont you have a lathe, Carls weekly videos are worth watching!

*****
Dont forget: its storage and organization month! Heres a great storage project for you winos. I mean wine drinkers. Stan Peters wine rack.

Bessey Auto adjust hold down clamps

Recently I was lucky enough to be chosen by Bessey to test their new auto-adjust hold-down clamps. I received 8 clamps free of charge and I simply love them!

I received my Bessey clamps on Friday and couldnt wait to try them. In comparision to the old de-Sta clamps they are on a scale of their own. Just having the ability to be able to change thicknesses of wood and not have to grab a wrench, makes work go some much faster. They appear to be well made with nice weight and the mechanicalparts seem to work flawlessly. I can see them holding up to vigorous work for years to come.  One word "Awesome!"

Build a better mousetrap

There must be more mousetrap designs than any other contraption. Stig Schjervheim from Norway made this mousetrap with hand tools. Patterned after an 18th century trap, he says hes already captured eight mice. Thanks for the video, Stig!

Make a rustic wheelbarrow for the garden

Inspiration from an unlikely source

I was watching an episode of Adventure Time recently featuring the Snow Golem. In one scene he was pushing around a rustic little cart. Even though it is just cartoon drawing, I love the wooden wheels (complete with a chip that I included quite by accident in my wheelbarrow) and the unevenness of the side boards.

I was so intrigued by the simplicity whimsy of it that I decided to make one for the garden. A perfect pallet wood project.

Soon, my idea evolved and became a bit more stylish as I transformed it into a wheelbarrow. Inspiration is one of those things that just happens. The trick is to keeping yourself open to it all the time.

Relax. Its rustic.

The advantage to rustic projects is that you really dont need to stress out about any of this. No protractors or exact measurements needed. If parts are a little off, dont sweat it: its a rustic project! Got any rusty nails lying around? Use them! If a nail bends over when you are pounding it in, leave it that way. And any uneven, split boards and chipped out wood you use adds to its charm, just as with the Snow Golems little cartoon cart.

Plans

This is another project that anyone can build with very little experience and limited tools. I used my miter saw, but you could just as easily use a circular saw or a jig saw. You will need a hammer and nails and a drill and screws.

If you decide to use pallet wood (its free!) watch the first part of my Rustic Side Table video to see my method for breaking them apart into wood you can use.

Transferring photos to wood

Νίκος Ζαγοραίος (Nick) in Greece sent me pictures of a guitar he decorated with photos. Using Mod Podge is a great technique for certain projects. Definitely a custom job! Nick took the time to rub this out to a nice glossy finish.

And heres a totally cute video explaining the technique:

Fall Porch Preview

I happen to love Autumn and Halloween.  Some of my most favorite memories with my dad are during Halloween when my children were younger.  He truly enjoyed that day, just like a kid himself.  Hubby and I always spent Halloween at my parents house along with my sister and it was so much fun.  We would take our kiddos trick or treating around the neighborhood with Mom while Dad cooked up a big pot of chili for all of us to enjoy.  Then when the kids were worn out, or maybe we were, wed walk back to their house to enjoy a warm bowl of chili and it always smelled so good inside.  Warm, welcoming and home, you know?

While my youngest never got to meet his Papa, Im glad his older siblings have those memories and share them with him often.  Its important to me that he know what a kind and fun man his grandpa was.  These days, I make my dads chili for my family and we create new memories.

And while most of our kids are now too old for trick or treating, hubby and I still take our youngest and love to visit my parents old neighborhood just so we can remember all the fun we used to have.  Its one of those special memories I will always cherish.  And Im so thankful I can still go back there and remember....

Because of those memories, decorating for that season is always special for me and special for my family so thats what I spent this past weekend doing.   I want to make it fun for them because its our tradition. Its not quite ready yet but I wanted to give you a little preview just to peak your interest a little.....

This year, Im going all out on the decor.  :)  And Im looking forward to finishing it up and blogging about the rest of the porch soon!

Enjoy your day!
